The Education System for understanding Cine Optics

A new concept to

educate Cine Industry Professionals

If we look at the available ways to acquire knowledge about the mechanical and optical design of cine lenses, as well as how to evaluate their condition and maintain them, we quickly see that options are limited. In most cases, one has to rely on manufacturer training programs. While these courses provide valuable expertise, they are restricted to lenses that are still in production and to the extent that each manufacturer is willing to disclose technical details.

The Lens Academy bridges this gap by combining the insights gained from manufacturer training with essential knowledge about lens testing equipment, specialized technician tools, and in-depth understanding of cine lens mechanics. It also covers calibration and servicing of optical systems.

Each course is tailored to the participant’s individual needs. Before the training begins, we schedule a personal video call to discuss your daily tasks, challenges, and learning goals.

Bring your own lens!

If you have a specific lens with problems you’d like to learn to repair, we will address it during the course.
This way, you gain both general expertise and immediately applicable skills for your own equipment.

The first course is held over two consecutive days.

Day One – Theory

This day is purely educational. We will learn about lens evaluation using the most widely employed measurement tools. You will learn how these instruments function, how to operate them effectively, and how to interpret their results.

We examine the mechanical challenges of opto-mechanical design and the solutions most widely adopted in the cine industry, with the main objective of gaining a deep understanding of the most commonly used mechanical designs. This includes the rationale behind material selection, the use of lubricants, surface finishes and specialized functional coatings such as anti-reflective treatments and varnishes.

We also address the most frequently occurring issues, recommended service intervals, and standard diagnostic procedures.

Day Two – Practice

This day is entirely practical. You will apply the knowledge gained on the previous day directly to your own lens, testing it on various measurement systems and analyzing the results in detail.

In addition, you will be taught how to identify your specific problem, understand how it can be fixed, and gain insight into the underlying mechanical design of your lens.

If possible we will help you to fix it right away.

Goal of the Course

The overarching goal is to provide you with the skills to recognize faults in cine lenses and to perform maintenance confidently—independent of brand or manufacturer.

To reinforce your learning, the course also includes two follow-up video calls after completion, allowing you to review your progress and clarify any remaining questions.
